The US Farm Bill: What it means for the environment, our food supply and our farming way of life

The Environmental Working group's ken cook to be next Cazenovia forum speaker

Our speaker will be Ken Cook, president and founder of the Washington, DC-based Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org).

Mr. Cook is a noted critic of U.S. agriculture policy whose environmental perspective and commentary appear often in national newspapers and the major broadcast news shows.  The New York Times has credited EWG’s web site – which lists all the nation’s farm subsidy recipients and the amount of taxpayer dollars that each one receives – with helping “transform the farm bill into a question about equity and whether the country’s wealthiest farmers should be paid to grow commodity crops while many smaller family farms receive nothing and are going out of business.”

Friday, March 14th at 7:00 pm in the Catherine Cummings Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

In addition, Mr. Cook and his organization’s research and analysis are major forces in national policy debates over toxic chemicals, pesticides, and air and water pollution.

This is the fifth event in the Cazenovia Forum lecture series, which was founded last year by local residents to promote discussion and understanding of critical issues facing our nation and the world today.  The Forum has previously hosted Jim Angle, Washington correspondent for Fox News Channel, Thomas Blanton, director of the National Security Archive, Rebecca Lipkin, London-based producer for the Al Jazeera English television network, Tom Ricks, military correspondent for the Washington Post, and Dr. Harvey Bender, Hesburgh Lecturer and noted genetics ethicist .
